1st day of work in colorado
started work today.
i will be working in this anti-warfarin clinic for the 1st 2 weeks of our work in st mary corwin's hospital in pueblo, colorado.
basically, for non-pharmacy n med students, warfarin is a medication that prevents blood clots and used in people with heart problems usually or stroke. and so it can cause bleeding in patients if we never control the dosage. and for this drug, it has like interactions with 200 plus items ranging frm medication to food.
so at the clinic, what they do is to monitor the prothrombin time/INR to see if the warfarin dosage is suitable. depends on the kinds of drugs they are taking. so what i did today was basically to observe and prick people's fingers to get their blood for the tests just like glucose test. the preceptor is a funny and nice guy, though its kinda sad he will be retiring at the end of this year. he tries to make his patients happy which is rare i tink. i think most of his patients will miss him too.
will be doing other rotations in the anti-warfarin clinic like in step-up clinics, community clinics where people approach u to talk about their medication etc. which is good in a sense, because i get exposed to more stuff.
2 of our neighbours actually work in the same place as us, so we managed to hitch rides from them to work, which is around a 20 min drive. and so we will only rent cars in the weekends to drive to other cities in colorado, and get groceries and stuff. which is gd in a sense as we save money. rentals are expensive. like 500 plus usd for 1 month, which doesnt include petrol. we used only 2 sections and it cost us 20 usd to top it back up to normal level.
the climate in colorado is kinda mad. in the day, its like singapore. around 30 degrees. with lotsa wind, so it might get cold. at night, it can go to below 20 degrees or even below 10 degrees in the dewpoint timings.
oh and there's a 14 hr difference with singapore. since huiching asked. haha
hope time passes more slowly. =)
